Hargrave Military - Men of character are made, not born - a fact that Hargrave Military Academy knows best. While most military academies are known for their core values of duty, service and self-discipline, Hargrave has a student experience that encompasses much more. Here, young people graduate not only as academics, but also as leaders, athletes, and complete individuals primed for lifelong success.
Located in Chatham, Virginia, Hargrave has kept its cadets engaged, challenged and inspired since 1909. While many military schools focus solely on improving behavior or grades, a quick walk around campus shows that there is much more to Hargrave education than that. . Hargrave's holistic approach and structured environment provide graduates with the tools they need to be leaders of character primed for lifelong success.

Hargrave offers an enriching educational environment with two characteristics: structure and accountability, allowing young people to focus their attention on the areas that matter most to them, eliminating distractions. Here, too, emphasis is placed on spiritual development, and cadets – seventh through twelfth graders and graduates – have the opportunity to develop their faith and access spiritually-based extracurricular activities. Younger boys in grades 7, 8, and 9 participate in a special academic program at the Center for Integrated Secondary Studies, where they hone specific skills that will ensure academic and interpersonal success later in life.

Hargrave cadets have many opportunities to realize their potential and hone the skills needed to achieve it. Just ask Rob Bartenstein, a graduate of the Class of 1987, who says, “HMA taught me self-confidence, how to study, focus and learn; he taught me how to win and that winning brings rewards worth working hard for. They taught me discipline, how to lead and how to follow."
Hargrave teaches young cadets to be effective leaders – not just decision makers in boardrooms, but leaders at home, in their churches and communities. The Cadet Corps' military structure teaches them how to build trust, lead their peers, make sound and ethical decisions, and receive feedback gracefully when it's given.
The top seven character traits are also reinforced monthly, on a rotating basis, in all aspects of the Hargrave experience – whether academics, athletics, home life or spiritual programs. At the Center for Leadership and Ethics – which cadets have access to as early as 7th grade – they begin to explore and develop basic character skills. The leadership curriculum will accompany them along their journey, starting with the Leadership I course before continuing with the Leadership II course.

Hargrave is a school built on Christian principles and helps in the spiritual development of the youth in its care. However, boys from all religious backgrounds are welcome to enjoy this transformative educational experience. Involvement in a local church is encouraged but not required.
Here, each formation is inspired to explore its spirituality in its own way to lay a solid foundation for building fulfilling lives. Worship and fellowship are still the focal points of the community. Also, attending church services twice a week is a requirement. Daily devotional time is equally important, serving as an opportunity for students to think quietly alone, in an intimate group, or in a large group.
A variety of programs are also available to make the Hargrave experience even more complete, ensuring souls are enriched alongside bodies and minds. During Spiritual Emphasis Month, guest speakers and speakers visit the school, while music and group bonding experiences are held across campus. Transportation is provided for cadets who wish to go to nearby churches for service or service.

Hargrave also has rigorous academic instruction that lays the foundation for college-level knowledge and develops students' critical thinking and study skills. The Academy offers the How to Study program, which teaches effective study habits such as note-taking, homework planning, and exam preparation. This offer ensures that cadets never feel frustrated or overwhelmed by the tasks presented to them during their academic journey.
The Academic Learning Center also prepares cadets through individual assessment and placement in math, reading and English. When the time comes to apply the knowledge, each cadet does so during designated study hall sessions and individual hours. Other advanced course offerings include dual enrollment, advanced placement, specialty courses and a variety of online modules.
Is it a formula that works? Graduating classes regularly achieve a 100% college acceptance rate, and more than 75 cadets have been accepted into US service academies. Last year, scholarships awarded to students for higher education amounted to more than four million US dollars.

Well Rounded Boarding Schools That Produce All Rounded Graduates
Hargrave students also excel outside of the classroom. They train their bodies through one of the Academy's 11 varsity sports offerings: baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, golf, rifle, soccer, swimming/diving, tennis, track or wrestling. Each sport is led by coaches trained by the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Through the Marine Corps-certified Obstacle Course and Leader Response Course, cadets learn fundamental skills in teamwork, critical thinking and decision-making - all of which will serve them well in life. Some have found their calling in life by developing these skills. In fact, 29 former players have gone on to play in the NBA, while more than 100 have become Division I athletes.
