The Harley-Davidson WLA is a Harley-Davidson motorcycle manufactured to the US. it. Army specifications in the years during and around World War II. It was based on an existing civilian model, the WL, and was of the Type 45 Solo, so named for its 45 cubic inches (740 cm).

Harley-Davidson began small-volume production of the WLA in 1940 as part of a general military expansion. In the United States' later attempts at World War II, production was increased significantly, with some 70,000 produced during the war (along with spares equaling many more). Harley-Davidson would also produce a WLA close variant for the Canadian Army called the WLC, and would also supply smaller numbers to Britain, South Africa and other allies, as well as fill orders for various Navy and Marine Corps models.

Unusually, all WLAs produced after Pearl Harbor received serial numbers indicating 1942 production, regardless of actual year. Hence war machines would become known as 42WLAs. This may be in recognition of continued use of the same specification. Most WLCs were made in 1942 and 1943 and were marked 42WLC or 43WLC. The exact serial number as well as casting marks can be used to accurately date a particular engine and some other parts bear year and month stamps. Frame and many other parts are not serialized but can be dated by casting number. This is common before the vehicle identification number (VIN) is added.
Many WLAs would be delivered to allies under the Ld-Lease program. The largest bill was the Soviet Union, which sold over 30,000 shares.
Production of the WLA ceased after the war but was revived for the Korean War in 1949-1952.
Most wool in Western hands after the war was sold as surplus and "civilized"; The many motorcycles available at very low cost would lead to the rise of the chopper and other modified motorcycle styles as well as the surrounding biker culture. Many young soldiers came home hoping to get a Harley-Davidson like the ones he had seen or driven on duty, leading to the popularity of both the bike and the company in Geralt after the war.

However, this also ensured that few near-original WLAs would survive in the US. it. Or in Western Europe. A significant number of VLAs remained in the Soviet Union and were retained or placed in private hands. With little access to parts and no chopper culture and no export route to the West, many of the wools were preserved during the Cold War. Russia and other former Soviet countries are now a major source of WLAs and parts.
The WLA is very similar to civilian models, especially the WL. Among the changes that make it a military model:
Almost never used as combat vehicles or for troop mobility, US Allied motorcycles were rarely fitted with sidecars, as was common on the German side. However, the Vlas in Soviet service were often equipped with grandfather wagons and were used as front-line combat vehicles. Despite this, the WLA earned the nickname "Liberator" because it was liberated by soldiers liberating occupied Europe.
The benefit of the WLA is a side valve design that is reliable, if not particularly efficient compared to overhead valve designs. Harley-Davidson was already producing overhead-valve engines for its large twin lines, but the "small twin" flathead design was popular in applications that demanded low cost and reliability over performance. This gene remained in production in the Servi car from 1937 to 1973, although it was replaced in two-wheeled motorcycles by the more advanced Flathead gene used in the 1952 Model K, the short-lived ancestor gene of the 1957 OHV Sportster.

Although the model designation suggested high compression, the Army version actually used a medium compression version for reliability. From today's perspective, the compression ratio of WLA is very low at 5:1. Due to the low compression ratio, a WLA runs on 74 octane petrol.
The WLA also features Springer front suspension. Harley-Davidson would not introduce telescopic forks until after the war. The rear wheel has no doubt giving this type of motorcycle the nickname "heavy tail".
Harley-Davidson supplied motorcycles to the Army during World War I and for earlier field trips against Mexican revolutionaries like Pancho Villa.
During World War II, the Army drew up a specification for a motorcycle similar to the BMW used by the German armed forces. This meant a smooth ride, a boxer engine and a few other features that made BMWs exceptionally reliable and low-maintenance machines. Harley-Davidson closely modeled the XA on the BMW. About 1,000 were produced. Because of its new features and low production, the XA was expressive, and by that time it was clear that the Jeep was the Army's preferred general-purpose vehicle. The less advanced but cheaper WLA is considered adequate for its limited duties.

Other bikes produced by HD for WWII were the US. it. Army and Canadian versions of the Big Twin AL family, the ELA and ELC, and a US Army version, the UA. There was also an experimental three-wheeled TA with a 69 cc engine. These were primarily made for use on the "home front" and not in very large numbers. Therefore, today they are very rare.
Indian, Harley-Davidson's main competitor at the time, also produced several wartime models such as the Indian 640, the Indian CAV/340, the Indian 741 and a twin-shaft longitudinal V-drive model, the Indian 841.
Harley-Davidson later produced the MT350E after acquiring the British company Armstrong in 1987. These are dual-sport machines that can be used both on- and off-road and are powered by 350cc Rotax engines. The MT350E was a redesign of the 500 cc Armstrong MT500, reducing weight, adding electric start and improving emission standards. The MT500 started out as the Italian SWM XN Tornado which Armstrong acquired the rights to which SWM liquidated in 1984 and was modified for military use using CCM.is to ensure older versions of your web browser data stay safe .
